Making small quilts for kids in crisis
ABC Quilts of Colorado is an organization comprised of more than 70 volunteers creating small quilts for children in crisis or need. These quilts benefit children in situations such as social services, women’s safe houses, teen mom centers, homeless family shelters and emergency rooms.
Founded in 1993 by Bonny Rogerson, ABC Quilts of Colorado became incorporated in 1997 and received Federal 501(c) 3 status in 1999. Originally it began with a very small group of volunteers donating a small number of quilts for babies born in fragile health. As our number of volunteers has grown to more than 70, also the number of small quilts donated has grown. In the past 25 years more than 25,000 quilts have been created and donated. In 2017, more than 1,500 small quilts were made and donated to give love, comfort, security and warmth to children in need.
The organization meets at two different locations. The main group meets twice a month at St. James Episcopal Church in Wheat Ridge. The north group meets once a month at a private home in Boulder County. The meetings are comprised of sewing, learning new quilting ideas, sharing fabric and enjoying lunch. The highlight of each meeting is the presentation, by each quilter, of their finished quilts. Through the act of sharing their talents by making small quilts for children in crisis, the volunteers are sharing friendships, supporting one another and encouraging of the art of quilting.
